Excellent insights, Matt! I’m sorry I missed this one when it was new. I really appreciated your attention to the oft overlooked details of the film. I’d be curious to hear more of your thoughts on the theological aspects of the film as well. But, “most acclaimed Jesus film of all time”? You’re joking, right?
I do find it interesting that this film virtually always makes lists of Jesus films, even as it, technically, only loosely fits into the genre. Interestingly, Idle’s “Jesus Christ: Lust for Glory” quote was indicative of the early concept for the film - to lampoon Jesus. But, as the Pythons did research and read the Gospels, they decided Jesus was nothing to laugh at and instead should be treated respectfully. It’s interesting, then, that their efforts to avoid poking fun at Jesus himself garnered accusations of outright blasphemy.
Thanks again for another insightful podcast! Looking forward to the next!
