Several times you refer to the cast as “students”. Yet there is no such indication in the movie that they are anything other than an acting troupe.

I think there are “indications” - their similar ages, their style of dress, their interactions and so on. It’s not definite proof, so perhaps another word might have been more appropriate, but I think it’s fairly likely that that is what is intended.
